UTAU is a free, community-driven singing synthesizer application initially developed in 2008 by the pseudonymous creator Ameya/Ayame.[1] Designed as a flexible alternative to commercial software like VOCALOID, UTAU allows users to create and edit synthetic vocals using custom voice libraries and event sequences.[2] Unlike proprietary systems, UTAU relies on community contributions for voicebanks, plug-ins and localized support, fostering a decentralized ecosystem of creators and developers.[3]

Unlike spectral modeling used in VOCALOID, UTAU’s output heavily depends on the quality of voicebank samples and resampler algorithms.
